John, Nigel, George and Elizabeth had a fantastic time on Saturday raising money to help Ely and District CAP clients with specific emergency requests by walking 14 miles from Orford in Suffolk.
What a great day we had! The plan was to walk 18 miles but saw the forecast for the afternoon & lowered the miles to approximately 14 miles due to the expected very high temperatures. An early start leaving Ely at 6.30am and set off from Orford, walking at 8.30am through woodland, heathland, then a coffee break at Butley Church, a really old church with a thatched roof. John thought this was lunch time & handed out the pork pies to lighten his rucksack!
Then down to the River Butley watching kestrels & herons for lunch where we saw a seal & a kingfisher. The tide was coming in fast and very windy so the ferry (rowing boat ) was only taking one person at a time. The Ferry has been in operation here since the 12th century, (but guessing the boat has been upgraded since). We actually spoke to another walker who volunteers for CAP in Ipswich, what a ‘Godincidence’, I believe he may have sponsored John.
Now onto the final stretch, along the estuary towards Orford , great views & conversations about the abandoned military buildings over on Orford Ness used for testing bombs in the Cold War, also the home of radar & BBC World service for a while. Arriving at cafe in Orford to enjoy tea & cake. A successful day! Thank you to Nigel for leading the walk and for the walk report, to John for driving us and to George & Elizabeth for being great company.
And the best part of the walk was that over £2,500 was raised to support Ely and District CAP clients! A huge thank you for everyone who supported the walk and for all your generous donations.
Ephesians 4:1 - 6 (MSG)
4 1-3 In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.
4-6 You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.
We are called to walk the same path, supporting and upholding each other in the Oneness of Christ's love, with no division or distinction, walking - and running - in the direction that God calls us to travel.
The CAP debt process is a part of this journey, helping those suffering with the burden of debt on the path to debt freedom. But we also want
to make this a continuing journey, to further help our clients with tools and support for their ongoing journey, to continue debt freedom so that they can focus on other issues and building a better future. As part of this mission, we will be introducing income maximisation for our clients (benefit checks, help with council tax, Universal credit, financial skills etc), along with helping them to understand the balances of income and expenditure in their budgets to help create the space in their lives for rest, refreshment and social support with the easing of the burdens of financial worry.
Over the last few weeks, two more clients are now debt free! One of the earliest Ely and District CAP clients has paid off her debt through her debt management plan since May 2018. This is an example of how a quick fix isn't necessarily the best result, but that there is a need for continued patient progress over a long time period to help promote financial stability and help remove the burden of debt.
